Youngest victim of mesothelioma loses her fight for survival

A 28 year old girl has become the youngest victim of an asbestos-related disease.

The young lady died in hospital after she developed mesothelioma, a cancer caused by asbestos exposure.

It is thought that she was exposed to asbestos either at school, from old school buildings, or when she walked to school through the yard of a factory where asbestos was cut.

It can take up to 40 years for symptoms of asbestos-related diseases to show and medical experts say it is unusual for someone so young to be diagnosed.

Mesothelioma occurs in the "mesothelium", a thin lining in the chest and abdomen.

Dr Keith Prose, chairman of the British Lung Foundation, said: "It is very unusual to see anyone with mesothelioma below the age of 55 and this implies exposure at a very early age.

"It is a cancer that usually requires a latent period of between 30 and 40 years to develop after exposure."
About 2,000 people a year in the UK are diagnosed with mesothelioma.
