Clay worker injured in conveyor belt accident

A clay workers accident has resulted in serious injuries when he became trapped in a conveyor belt at a Cornish clay plant.

The 45-year-old suffered chest and head injuries in the incident at the Imerys clay drying plant in Par on Thursday. He was taken to Treliske Hospital in Truro.

The Health and Safety Executive is now working alongside police at the scene to establish what happened.

The man got stuck in a large conveyor belt which is used to move heavy cement bags.

Ambulance staff said it took some time to free him.

Ivor Bowditch, from Imerys, said the company's thoughts were with the injured man and his family: "Everyone here at Par will feel this very personally.

"We are proud of our safety record and safety is taken extremely seriously.

"An incident which involves injury is hurtful to us all."

He said the company would work for "as long as it takes" to establish the facts.
