Four year old girl disabled from hospital negligence
A disabled four- year-old Gloucester girl is at the centre of a £300,000 High Court claim for hospital negligence.
The child has a disabled shoulder as a result of hospital staff pulling too hard when the baby became stuck during delivery.
The four-year-old suffers from permanent physical disability, physiotherapy may improve her strength and range of movements, but her condition may still deteriorate. Her injuries are likely to affect her quality of life and employability and certain jobs will remain closed to her.
The baby's head was delivered during the birth, but the baby's shoulders became stuck and a midwife called for help.
Later, hospital staff noticed the baby was not moving her left arm well, and although they queried whether she had Erb's Palsy, no follow up was arranged.
The girl's legal team says the hospital had no logical and structured plan of management for shoulder dystocia (becoming stuck) failed to implement guidelines, failed to supervise the midwife, allowed her to take over overall responsibility for the woman's care, and pulled too hard.
The hospital are unable to comment at this time.
