Forestry worker has fingers sawn off
A 40 year old wood turner from Devon has lost the fingers on his right hand after he tried to mend a piece of equipment.
The accident happened as Darren was working with a circular saw which became blocked. Darren thought he had switched the saw off but he was not aware that there was a fan operating also within the saw to take away the dust. There were no warning signs and no other controls that he could see. He opened the saw to clear the blockage. The fan was concealed and he did not know of its presence. He put his hand in but the fan was still in operation. The fan took his three middle fingers off along with the tips of his little finger and thumb.
"Darren has suffered a traumatic injury to his dominant hand. He will require further surgery in the future and his ability to use his right hand is now in question" said Bond Pearce Personal Injury specialist Tracy Williams.
"This incident is made worse by the fact that he lives in a cottage supplied by the company for its workers. If he is no longer able to work he might have to find alternative accommodation."
"It is important that we are able to get Darren an early interim payment to ensure that he gets the treatment and rehabilitation that he needs
