Doctor covers up breast cancer misdiagnosis
A conusltant surgeon who wrongly gave a breast cancer victim the all clear destroyed her X-rays to cover his tracks, it was claimed yesterday.
The General Medical Council heard that the Consultant, Mr Philip, was not qualified to read mammograms. He twice told her she was healthy after routine checks. During the second examination he felt a "shelf" but said it was "no need for concern". The 39-year-old mother-of-two reported pain in her breast and died after the cancer spread to her back and ribs.
Mr Philip held a mainly administrative role as clinical director of an NHS breast screening service until 2003 and also worked for private clinics in Sheffield and Huddersfield.
The General Medical Council heard two allegations, that he reported on the mammogram himself, and that he destroyed the mammogram report from 1994. Mr Philip denies destroying the X-ray deliberately. The hearing continues.
