Trawler man amputates thumb in quay side fishing accident
An experienced, 47 year old trawler man lost his thumb whilst on his first day with a new employer thanks to the incompetence of a fellow employee.
Robert was casting off the boat when a fellow trawler man retied a rope that Robert was unhitching. His left hand became crushed between the rope and a bollard as the 25 metre beam trawler he was due to be working on pulled away from the quay. Robert had to witness the amputation of this thumb, an experience which has left him physically and mentally scarred.
Following the incident, Robert had to endure hours of surgery to try and reattach his thumb. He is now left with half a thumb and is in constant pain and reliant on pain killers. He has also experienced "phantom" limb pain, describing a sensation of pain in the area of his thumb which he has lost as a result of the accident. Everyday tasks which he used to take for granted are now more difficult for Robert and washing and dressing cause him extreme pain.
As a result of contacting Bond Pearce's specialist personal injury team, Robert was awarded £12,500.00 in compensation in an out of court settlement.
