Medical error leaves lady with nerve injury
A lady blood donor was left her with nerve damage after a nurse's error.
Edith donated blood on many occasions before the incident that injured her. She had been in her local blood donation clinic as usual when the nurse began to take her blood. As she inserted the needle Edith began to suffer pain in and around her thumb. As the nurse moved the needle around it sent further pain up through Edith's arm.
Edith began to feel very unwell. A senior colleague came over and informed Edith that the nurse had "tickled" a nerve. The needle was removed and Edith was told to rest for a while until her dizziness had passed. She finally left 20 minutes later but still had pins and needles through her arm.
The following day Edith was still experiencing pain so she visited her GP. She was given painkillers and some exercises to follow but nothing seemed to work so eventually she was referred to a specialist.
The specialist carried out some nerve conduction tests and confirmed that she had indeed suffered a nerve injury from the blood donation.
The injury affected Edith's job because it involved a lot of driving and lifting which with the constant ache in her arm she found very difficult.
The specialist Clinical Negligence solicitor at Bond Pearce investigated Edith's claim.
The team sought Edith compensation not only for the physical suffering that the medical mistake had left her with but also for the losses and expenses that she had incurred. She was awarded £11,000 in compensation.
