Failure to keep designated areas clear caused worker to fall
A dockyard welder received £10,000 in compensation after he fell at work.
Whilst moving around the ship he was working on Vic fell over a wooden pallet which had been left in a designated clear area behind some watertight doors. He fell landing on his left side and injuring his hand and foot.
An x-ray on his hand showed that he had torn the tendons but it was his foot that was causing him problems. His foot had an open wound. He saw his GP every two weeks and went to hospital once a week to have the dressing changed because the wound was not healing.
Vic was unable to return to work due to the open wound. His job involves welding and he has to wear safety boots. His GP was also very concerned that if he burnt his foot it might never heal. Vic was made redundant by the company just 6 months before he was due to retire.
It was 8 months later during a check up that another x-ray was taken which showed a bit of bone in his foot had chipped off and was lodged in the flesh. After this was removed, his foot began healing quickly. Even now,Vic has to have check ups every 3 months to see how his foot is doing.
