Operation mistake ignored leaving child with abnormal thumb

Charlie was born with an unusual congenital condition called delta phalanx a triangular shaped deformity of the bone in the thumb. He had to attend hospital regularly for review and it was decided that he was to undergo an operation to correct the deformity. The operation involved inserting a wire known as a K-wire into his thumb to stabilise the area that they were operating on. The day after the operation an x-ray was taken of Charlie's thumb which showed that the K-wire had been inserted incorrectly and it had embedded itself into the soft tissue of his thumb. Although the x-ray had been taken and clearly showed the mistake, no one from the medical staff looked at the x-ray. There a certain amount of time in which to redo the operation and this was missed.

The growth of Charlie's thumb will be restricted and he will be left with an abnormal digit for the rest of her life.

Bond Pearce were able to secure Charlie £40,000 in compensation.
