Hand crushed by broken machine
Irene was a general assembler for a large manufacturing company. She worked in a factory on a hydraulic press machine. She was removing a piece of machinery from the press machine when she dropped her spanner. As she bent down to pick it up her body pushed the operation levers which meant that the plates in the machine kicked into action. She didn't have time to remove her hand. Her right hand was crushed between the place and a metal cylinder. There was no stop button and so she had to let the machine go through its 30second cycle before her hand became free. She suffered a severe compound crush fracture to her right dominant hand. She had 3 operations over the following few months. She had lost the use her right little finger and it was eventually amputated.
Irene was very resilient, she was adamant that she wanted to carry on working although it caused her considerable pain to do so. She was n her late 50's at the time of the accident and eventually reduced her hours to part time. The factory admitted fault very early on and Irene's claim was settled quickly by Bond Pearce who worked with her employers and their insurers which was important as Irene wanted very much to continue working for the company.
