Falling objects

Hard hats are a common sight on our building and construction sites but you still don't expect to be struck by falling objects. The Health and Safety Executive reported that the number of deaths from being struck by a moving or falling object increased from 34 to 40 in 2006/07, an increase of 18%.

The Regulations that govern how employers should avoid falling objects from harming their employees are The Work at Height Regulations 2005.

The Regulations require that the duty holder does all that is reasonably practicable to prevent anything from falling. They should ensure that nothing is thrown or tipped from a height if it is likely to injure someone and they must ensure that nothing is stored in a way that could cause injury to someone if it moves. If a workplace contains an area where there is a risk from a falling object or person, that area must be clearly indicated and unauthorised people should be unable to reach it.
