Accidents Overseas

We also act for visitors from other countries who are injured during their stay in the UK. Our cases come from all over the world - including USA states popular with business and tourists alike such as Florida, New York and California. In Europe many of our cases come from Spain, France, Greece, Cyprus and Germany. We have many links with lawyers overseas and are able to advise where ever your accident happened.

Our expertise includes acting for those who are injured as a result of accidents...
- on the road. Many people are injured as drivers, passengers or pedestrian accidents whilst overseas. And a number of our clients are holiday makers or business travellers who are involved in 'fly drive' accidents. Many of our cases also involve those injured as pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, pillion passengers, those travelling on coaches and tour buses and those on excursions.
road traffic accidents overseas
- during the flight. Fortunately injury whilst flying is rare but when it does happen you need specialist lawyers who understand this area of the law which can be complex. Our cases include acting for people who have been burnt from spilt hot drinks, injury from falling objects, collapsing seats, tripping and slipping, injury as a result of serious disasters.
- at sea. We have been acting for those who have been injured in incidents at sea for many years. We have acted for divers, off shore workers, oil riggers, fishermen, tourists, cruise passengers, powerboat racers and submariners in a range of incidents involving accidents at sea, injuries, industrial disease, illness whilst on holiday, equipment failures, lack of safety equipment, poisoning, electrical faults causing fires and explosions and injuries as a result of non-seaworthy vessels. We have specialist knowledge of acting for those in the armed forces and we have also sadly dealt with a number of fatalities as a result of marine accidents.
Accidents occurring in foreign waters or onshore at foreign ports can be complex. We have success in bringing claims both in the UK and overseas and have developed close working relationships with lawyers in other countries. We also act for seafarers who are not UK citizens where their injury claim can be brought in the English courts.
- playing or watching sports. Many people holiday specifically to take part in sports whilst overseas such as skiing, snowboarding, diving, walking and climbing. Others will enjoy sports on offer at their hotel complex during their stay such as water sports and other organised activities. Most sports activities are well organised with excellent facilities and instruction. However when it goes wrong not only is a holiday ruined but also it can have long lasting consequences. Injuries whilst taking part in sport can have a devastating effect and in some severe cases mean that the person will never be able to play that sport again. Even less severe injuries take their toll especially where a person needs to undergo treatment overseas and then lengthy rehabilitation. We have acted for a number of people injured whilst taking part in sport or spectating overseas - often due to unsafe environments, unsafe or inappropriate equipment and poor or incorrect tuition.
- whilst out in public places. We handle a range of claims for people who have been injured in public places whilst abroad including hotels, airports, amusement parks, shops, supermarkets, play areas, sports centres, roads, pavements and car parks. We have also handled cases for those injured whilst on excursions and at organised events such as fire work displays, concerts and sporting events. These claims are complex - often identifying the right defendant can be difficult. Our team is used to dealing with these cases and is able to get straight to the main issues for you.
- those suffering illness. Many of the cases we see are as a result of an illness caught whilst abroad such as food poisoning, cryptosporidium, salmonella and other gastric bugs which have spread due to contaminated food, water and general poor sanitisation in communal areas. Such illnesses not only ruin a holiday but can cause a lot of distress and in some cases severe illness requiring hospitalisation. Our travel solicitors have acted for many people who have suffered as a result of contracting an illness whilst overseas.
We also act for:
- Armed forces personnel and their families. We handle a large number of cases each year for service men and women stationed overseas who have been injured whilst on training exercise or in the duty of their day to day work. We have experience of acting for armed forces personnel and their families in all areas of personal injury from accidents on the road, at school, playing sport or as a result of a medical accident.

- Healthcare Tourism: where someone has travelled overseas specifically for medical treatment but which has then gone wrong.
- Cosmetic surgery: where someone has travelled overseas specifically to undergo cosmetic surgery which has then been performed incorrectly or the desired outcome has not been achieved.
Criminal injury whilst overseas
The CICA scheme in the UK only compensates people for criminal injuries suffered in England, Scotland and Wales. Injuries suffered while on holiday abroad are not covered but there may be a similar compensation scheme in the country where the injury occurred. Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, the Isle of Man and Jersey each have a criminal injuries compensation scheme.
